Why algae appears
Green algae ("verdín") grows where there is constant damp, little direct sun and porous material. It roots itself in the pores, which is why it comes back even after the surface looks clean. It is especially common in the damp highlands (Santa Brígida, Teror, San Mateo) and in north-facing patios.
Problems it causes
- Dark, neglected appearance
- Loss of the material's original colour
- Very slippery surfaces and risk of falls
- Faster wear of joints and paving
Why a hose or bleach doesn't fix it
Water and household products only clean the surface. Bleach may whiten it for a while but doesn't remove what is inside the pores, and can discolour some materials. Too much pressure opens the pores and makes algae come back faster.
How we remove it
We apply a specific biocide treatment, give it time to act and then clean with pressure matched to the material. Afterwards we can apply a preventive treatment or sealer to slow regrowth.
FAQ
Can algae be removed without damaging the floor?
Yes, if the product and pressure are right for the material. That's why we always test on a hidden area first.
How long before algae comes back?
If only the surface is cleaned, weeks. When the pores are treated, much longer, especially with preventive maintenance.
